How to Create a Project in iMovie 08

iMovie is an application on Macs that is used to create videos. An iMovie Project can be as simple or as complex as the amount of time and effort you wish to put into making it. To get you started if you’re a novice, this article walks you through the basics for creating a project in iMovie 08.

Steps

  1. Select “File”. On the drop-down menu, click on “New Project”.

  2. Type in a name for your project.

  3. Choose the aspect ratio that you want to use for your project. Base the aspect ratio you choose on the dimensions of the video and photos that you will be using in your iMovie project.

    • Standard (4:3) Produces a movie for viewing on the iPhone.
    • iPhone (3:2) Same as Standard.
    • Widescreen (16:9) Produces a movie ideal for viewing on a widescreen monitor or high definition TV.
  4. Add photos or videos to iMovie.

    • To add clips to your project, click a video clip to select a frame range that you want for your project.
    • To add movies, just drag the clip you want into the project.
    • To add photos choose “Window”, then “Photos”, and just click the “Photos” button in the iMovie toolbar.
    • This is the symbol on the iMovie toolbar.

    • Four seconds of video are automatically selected.
  5. Click the “Add to Project” button. This is located in the middle of the iMovie toolbar. Doing this will add a video to the end of your project.
    • You can drag your photos and videos to rearrange them in any order you want.
    • If you want to preview your movie, click the “Play Project” button below the project library or just press the Backslash (\) key.
  6. Add background music to enliven your movie. Just choose “Window”, then “Music and Sound Effects”, or click the “Music” button in the iMovie toolbar. Just drag the music file into the project.

  7. Add a transition between to clips if you want to make your movie look better. Click “Window”, then “Transitions”, and choose the transition you want.

  8. Add a title to your project if you want to show your movie title and/or end credits. Choose “Window”, then “Titles”, or click the “Titles” button in the iMovie toolbar.
